Angel Island State Park
Angel Island State Park spans 740 acres of forest and occasional wildflower displays and is a picture perfect setting for a day of outdoor adventure in San Francisco. Take a ferry ride to Angel Island Park and spend some time exploring this beautiful State Park. Indigenous wildlife can be seen on the island as well as a variety of bird life. Deer and raccoons are the only large mammals on the island. Seals and Sea Lions often swim over to the island. The highest point on the island is Mount Livermore, which offers spectacular views over San Francisco. Over 10,000 years ago, the island was connected to the mainland. With the raise in sea levels after the ice age, Angel Island became separated. More recently, between 1910 and 1940, the island served as a gateway for Asian immigrants. Before they could enter the mainland, they were subjected to medical tests, questioning and extreme treatment. For many this island was a prison as they waited to be approved citizens. Today Angel Island State Park is a museum and national recreational area that attracts many tourists each year. Angel Island is only accessible from the water, but there are a variety ways to get there. Renting a kayak, canoe or rowboat is a nice alternative to taking the ferry. Be warned though, the currents can be quite strong and you share the water with some large ships! Take a guided tour given by volunteers. The hiking trails are popular and the 5 mile hike to the top is relatively easy, with many viewpoints along the way. You can also rent a bike to explore the island. Or take a guided tram tour for an overview of the island and its historical sights. For the more adventurous camping permits are available. If the weather permits it, camping here is beautiful and has spectacular views over the San Francisco skyline and the Bay area. There are many campsites with excellent views and facilities are provided. Have a picnic at the beautiful picnic sites or enjoy a leisurely barbecue in this scenic spot. Whatever you decide be sure to spend some time on Angel Island in San Francisco!
