Coit Tower On Telegraph Hill

Situated on Telegraph Hill, Coit Tower is an important part of any San Francisco Itinerary. It is ranked as one of the top ten attractions in San Francisco and is!!

The Coit Tower is named after Lillie Hitchcock Coit who financed the building of the tower “for the purpose of adding beauty to the city which I have always loved”. There are many misconceptions the Coit Tower, most notably that many think that it was built to resemble a fire hose. The walls inside the Coit Tower are covered with art deco murals by 26 different artists. The murals depict different aspects of daily life in the 1930’s and present a strong socialist theme.

Telegraph Hill offers a magnificent panoramic view. It stands 275 feet above sea level. From up here you can see the Golden Gate Bridge, and many of San Francisco’s other major attractions.

The Tower is open daily from 10 – 6:30. On Saturday mornings at 11:00 am, you can take a free tour and view sections of the tower usually closed to the public. Walking up to Coit Tower is the best way to see the Tower and the view. For a small fee, you can take the elevator to the top for a completely panoramic view of the San Francisco skyline.

The surrounding residential area is also beautiful and makes for a beautiful walk.
