A day at San Francisco Zoo makes for a day of fun and learning. Great for children and adults, this Zoo houses over 250 different species of animals. There are also special exhibits as well as shows.

The San Francisco zoo has a historical highlights show which highlights the Zoo’s rich history and all the people who have been involved along the way. The Zoo was built in 1930 at a cost of $3.5 million. The zoo initially used animals from the Golden Gate Park. The zoo was the first to use bar-less exhibition areas.

The San Francisco zoo has been enjoying a budget increase over the past few years which has led to some new exhibits and animals at the zoo. In 2004, the African Savanna exhibit was opened. The African Savannah exhibit features a variety of African animals. See zebras, kudu, warthogs, giraffe’s and African Lions. See meerkats playing and watch ostriches too. The African exhibit is set amidst over 3 acre’s of ground. The San Francisco Zoo has been successfully breeding snow leopards since 1958. The Feline Conservation centre has been home to 42 snow leopards in this time. The centre is wooded and spacious.

The Lemur Forrest is a great exhibit - Black Lemurs, Red Ruffed Lemurs, Ring tailed Lemurs as well as black and white ruffed lemurs, amongst others, can be seen here. The San Francisco Zoo is home to polar bears, gorillas and grisly bears. There are also snakes, as well as many different species of birds.

San Francisco Zoo is a great place to bring children. The Children’s Zoo centre gives children the chance to interact with the animals. Children can groom and interact with the animals here.

The Zoo is open from 10am to 5pm daily.
