Ghirardelli Square: Chocolate Lovers Delight
Ghirardelli Square is situated at the far end of Fisherman’s wharf and provides a nice change of scenery from this thriving tourist area. It’s the perfect location for a nice ice cream from the traditional ice cream parlor on a hot day. Ghirardelli’s hot fudge sundaes are world famous and a must for any ice-cream loving visitor. Willy Wonka has nothing on Ghirardelli chocolate. It is delicious and worth the wait. This area was originally full of factories. In 1864 and housed factories making army uniforms for the Civil War. After this, the buildings housed the famous Ghirardelli Square and chocolate factory. The square has many great shops and restaurants. The Vietnamese Ana Mandara is the best restaurant in the square. There are over 70 shops and boutiques in this small area. There are also galleries. The Annual Ghirardelli Square Chocolate Festival is just one of the many festivals that take place here in the square. This festival usually takes place on the first or second weekend of September. The chocolate festival is great fun for the whole family and includes innovative activities like chocolate sculpting and ‘too good to be true’ activities like the ‘how much chocolate can you eat’ competition. This is a great festival for chocolate lovers. Ghirardelli Square is conveniently located at the end of the Cable Car tracks as well as a stop on the MUNI bus system. It is easily accessible and a great place to end your tour of the Fisherman’s wharf area.
