The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art is a landmark in San Francisco.

It is known not only for its impressive collection, but also for its beautiful design.

The gallery houses a sizable permanent collection of over 15 000 works which includes nearly 5000 paintings by great artists such as Matisse, Marcell Duchamp, Frida Kahlo and Frank Stella. The exhibitions here often display many other equally impressive works. There are sculptures, photographs and mixed media works in the collection and on display.

The gallery building itself is equally impressive with its large cylindrical skylight and stone impressive stone feature. The gallery was designed by Mario Botto, a swiss architect who designed the lobby floor as a large scale chessboard. These stark black and white stones provide the perfect backdrop for the famous art works on display here.

The interiors of the gallery are as beautiful as the outside.

Always be sure to check what exhibitions the museum has on, there are often some particularly special exhibits. Also, if you visit just before a large exhibition you are likely to be restricted from the floors where they are setting up. A day or two can make a huge difference. The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art is located at 151 3rd street and is easy to reach using public transport.

For art lovers the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art is a must see!
