See Grace Cathedral

This Episcopal Cathedral is awe inspiring and makes for a great afternoon. Grace Cathedral is located on Nob Hill this cathedral has a gothic design which is intricate and beautiful, a real treat for visitors.

The original Grace Church was built in 1849 and was destroyed in the massive 1906 earthquake and fire. The Grace Cathedral was built in its place. It is a small scale version of the Notre Dame. The church has magnificent stained windows which allow the afternoon sunlight to filter through in the most gorgeous colors.

The Keith Haring AIDS altarpiece is just part of their Aids artwork. They are currently featuring a beautiful tapestry made by South African women to document their struggles with HIV and AIDS in their small community.

Try to time your visit during an organ recital or choir performance. If you can attend a service here, it is a truly beautiful experience. The Aeolian-Skinner organ was gifted to the Cathedral in 1934. It produces a beautiful sound which is particularly impressive when coupled with the choirs that visit here. The Crocker Memorial Organ is also commonly used in church services and recitals. This organ was gifted to the Chapel in 1928 and features over 1,273 pipes.

This church is particularly open to spirituality and there is a definite air of non judgment. There is even a display in the corner dedicated to other religions.

The Labyrinths are well worth a visit if you have time. Walking the Labyrinth offers visitors a chance for meditation and reflection. People often use the term maze interchangeably – but a Labyrinth has a deeper spiritual purpose than merely finding the centre. For maximum benefit, you should walk barefoot. Enjoy some quiet reflection time amidst the always busy San Francisco.

Come and visit Grace Cathedral for a heavenly experience!
