San Francisco has an amazing diversity between different neighborhoods. The Haight Ashbury area was once known as the heart of the hippie movement. Flower power, free love and drugs were a part of life in the 1960’s Haight Ashbury area. Anti-war sentiments drove hippies to protest and places such as this became a haven for like-minded individuals.

Today this area is a cosmopolitan area which is crammed with character dating back to it’s hippie roots. This is a good place to shop for vintage items such as clothes or vinyl records. If you are looking for unique clothing then this is one of the best neighborhoods in San Francisco. Amoeba is one of the largest music stored in San Francisco and specializes in vinyl records.

Walking is the best way to see the Haight Ashbury district. There is a wide variety of walking tours with different themes. The Flower Power walking tour and the Haunted Haight walking are just some of the available tours.

This area has had some famous residents who continue to draw curious tourists. Janis Joplin, The Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane and even Charles Manson have all called this their home. These homes have become landmarks in their own right.

The Red Vic Movie house is also worth a visit. This movie house features some interesting independent films on subjects such as surfing and local culture. Enjoy the couch style seating and some coffee (in a mug) with popcorn and art movie. It is a unique movie viewing experience that is definitely recommended!

Some interesting characters remain in this area and you can never be sure how much of this area’s history these residents have seen.
