browse (1 / 3)

The 49 mile scenic drive is the best way to see and explore San Francisco at your own pace. This beautiful drive covers most of the major tourist attractions and allows you to take as much or little time as you like at each. Plan to spend about half a day – unless you get lost…

The route was initially created in 1938 as a distraction during the 1939 Golden Gate International Exposition. The route has changed considerably since the initial versions; the 49 mile scenic drive showcases San Francisco’s beauty. The route is clearly marked by blue and white signs that feature seagulls which leads visitors on a 49 mile round trip from the Civic centre and back. Passing all the major points of interest in one sitting gives you a wonderful overview of this beautiful diverse city and its many landmarks and points of interest.

The 49 mile scenic drive takes you from the Civic Centre past the Museum of Modern art, through Japantown and its beautiful plaza. Pass through Union Square and Chinatown before driving through Nob Hill. The drive also takes you through North Beach at which point you can see the famous Coit Tower. From here, it’s over to Pier 39 and Fisherman’s wharf where you can stop for a trip to Alcatraz or simply take some beautiful photo’s. Continue the drive past the Cannery and Ghirardelli Square until Lombard Street. The drive also passes the Palace of Fine Arts with its famous Exploratorium.

Drive on the Golden Gate Bridge and see Fort Point, Baker Beach and the Legion of Honor. The 49 mile scenic drive then takes you through the Golden Gate park and showcases some of the major highlights such as the Strybing Arboretum and the Japanese Tea Garden. Finally, the drive takes you through the Haight-Ashbury area as well the Castro District. The drive ends at the Civic centre.

You can also buy an audio guide for the drive to listen in your car!

The 49 mile scenic drive is a great alternative to the traditional guided tours, what could be better than enjoying the sights at your own pace? Especially great if you are traveling with small children who need frequent stops or get tired easily. You can simply choose to finish the drive on another day!

Do you have a car at your disposal and an afternoon to spare? Go explore the 49 mile scenic drive!
