Visit Golden Gate Bridge

The mile long Golden Gate Bridge offers visitors sweeping panoramic views of the San Francisco’s skyline.

This famous bridge connects San Francisco and Marin County – a crossing that used to be accomplished via ferry. At the time of completion, it was the largest bridge in the world – a distinction which it held for decades until the construction of the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge in New York. The cables that support the bridge are over 3 feet wide and did you know that the combined length of each individual cable string can circle the earth three times!

The Golden Gate Bridge is painted International Orange for maximum visibility in the constant mist that covers it and over a thousand gallons of the famous “International Orange” paint is used every week as part of routine ongoing maintenance!!

Construction of the Golden began on the 5th January 1933 and the first cars able to pass through by 28 May 1937. In the four years it took to construct the engineering marvel, 11 people lost their lives. The bridge holds the eerie distinction of being the most popular suicide location the world with over 1,000 suicides. The official count ended in 1995, but it is estimated that 25 people jump per year.

If the weather permits it, walking is the best way to see the Golden Gate Bridge. To walk the length of the entire bridge and back takes about an hour and there are many viewpoints along the bridge with excellent views. Make sure to take the elevator to the top and savor the amazing view of San Francisco Bay.

You can feel this mighty bridge creaking and vibrating to the sometimes powerful winds!!

Taking a bike ride is another popular choice for tourists who want to see the bridge. It is quite thrilling to ride the length of the bridge and experience the height and swing of the bridge (it actually vibrates!!).

Golden Gate souvenirs can be purchased at the Roundhouse which is located by the Strauss statue.

Make sure to dress in layers if you are going to be walking, it can get cold here.

And of course do not forget your camera!
