Visit The San Francisco Maritime National History Park
The San Francisco Maritime National History Park is probably one of the most worthwhile sights to see at the overcrowded Fisherman’s wharf in San Francisco. This impressive museum has some historic ships that have been around for over a hundred years. There are 6 historic vessels that can be viewed from the maritime museum at Hyde Street Pier. These include the 1886 Balclutha, the 1895 C.A. Thayer, the 1890 ferryboat Eureka, the 1891 Alma, the 1907 Hercules tug and the 1914 Eppleton Hall tug. These ships are beautiful and a delight to visitors. Board the ships and explore. There are some child friendly activities which regularly take place here. “Crafts for Kids” and “Birds of the Bay” are just some of the shows specifically created for children who come to the museum. Just outside is the Visitor Centre which is located on Jefferson Street in a beautiful building dating back to 1907. This centre makes a good starting point for visitors to the museum as it provides an overview of the maritime history as well as various interactive educational programs. A few minutes away on Polk Street is the Maritime Museum which displays the evolution of maritime technology. The Maritime Museum will reopen in 2009 after renovations are complete. Come and visit the San Francisco Maritime National History Park and experience this area’s rich maritime history aboard these floating monuments. Be sure to bring something warm, as it can get very cold on the boats. Kids and adults alike love this experience and its well worth a visit!
